Vernon Mooers writes

Summer Heat

how fresh Nan’s cucumber sandwiches
down on the rocks of French Lake
how clean the sea water at Shediac
the sting of crabgrass on salt covered legs
and the slippery rocks into the deep
icy cold June water of Grand Lake
where there were no monsters
water snakes, sharks or Portuguese-Man-of-War
how clear the pond at Danor Falls
the shining salmon parr up the Dunbar
and the springs and streams flowing
endlessly toward the sea

  1. Vernon reminisces about his boyhood in New Brunswick, Canada, with his "nan" (grandmother). Shediac, the "Lobster Capital of the World," was formerly known as "Es-ed-ei-ik," the Mi'kmaq word for "running far in" (in reference to the tide, which has a long range over the shallow, sandy beaches). Grand Lake was "Kchee'quis" (meaning Big Lake).
